Over 90 killed as boat sinks off Mozambique coast

More than 90 people have died after a boat capsized off the north coast of the African country Mozambique.

Officials in Nampula province said 130 people were believed to be on board the boat. Five of them have been rescued, reports BBC on Sunday (April 7).

According to officials, the vessel, which was using a fishing boat as a ferry, with 130 people on board tried to reach an island in Nampula province and the ferry showed mechanical trouble.

Nampula Secretary of State Jaime Neto said, ‘The boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers. That is why it started to sink. many children were among the dead.’

The victims were fleeing from the mainland to escape the cholera outbreak that had hit the country. An investigative team is working to find out the reason behind the boat capsize.

Nampula province has been one of the worst-affected by the cholera outbreak which has spread over several countries in southern Africa since January last year.
