Maldives to lift limit on recruitment of Bangladeshi labourers

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan said that the limit on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers will be lifted.

The announcement was made during a session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services on June 25.

He said that there are about 96,000 Bangladeshi workers in Maldives. We will make recommendation to the Parliament that this limit can be lifted. However, we will not recommend it until the security measures are fully implemented.

Minister Ihusaan stated that the cap must be removed due to the existing and anticipated demand for labor. Under the current Employment Act, a maximum of 100,000 Bangladeshi laborers can be brought to the Maldives.

Earlier, Maldives issued a ban on recruitment of Bangladeshi workers in 2019.
