Rishi Sunak announces resignation from party

British Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation following his party's defeat in the general election. 

In a speech outside Number 10 Downing Street, Sunak made the announcement on Friday.

Sunak said he would resign as Conservative leader, but would not leave the role immediately.

He also apologised to the British public, and wished his opponent Sir Keir Starmer success as Prime Minister. 

The Labor Party, led by Keir Starmer, won a landslide victory. The Conservatives lost over 250 seats.

Rishi Sunak took over as Prime Minister in October 2022, becoming the UK's first head of government of Indian origin. His tenure lasted less than two years.
