‘Events in Bangladesh a reminder of freedom and liberty’

India’s Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Thursday said that the recent developments in Bangladesh as a powerful reminder of the values of freedom and liberty.

“What's happening today in Bangladesh is a clear reminder of how precious liberty is to us. It’s easy to take freedom and liberty for granted, but it’s crucial to remember past stories that underscore the importance of these values,” he told reporters after hoisting the national flag at the Supreme Court premises on Independence Day.

Justice Chandrachud added, “Independence Day reminds us of the responsibilities we share as a nation in upholding the values of the Constitution.”

These remarks marked the Chief Justice’s first public comment on the recent events in Bangladesh, following weeks of student-led movements that resulted in the ousting of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister and the ongoing unrest in the country.
