Several daily newspapers and news portals in Tripura have reported that India has opened the Dumbur dam upstream of the Gumti River in Tripura to release water which has caused flood in Bangladesh.
According to Tripura media, the Tripura state government opened the dam. Even the Sonamura sub-divisional magistrate is now monitoring the matter.
The Dainik Sambad, a well circulated newspaper in Tripura, Jagaran Tripura, the Fact of Tripura and the Daily Desher Katha reported about the matter.
Indian central government has already dismissed allegations made by Bangladesh that their floods are taking place due to India releasing water from its dam.
“We have seen concerns being expressed in Bangladesh that the current floods in eastern border district of Bangladesh has been caused by opening of the Dumbur dam upstream of the Gumti River in Tripura. This is factually incorrect,’’ said the Ministry of External Affairs through a statement issued on Thursday.
India has said that the catchment areas of Gumti river that flows through India and Bangladesh have witnessed the heaviest rains of the year over the last few days. The flood in Bangladesh is primarily due to waters from these large catchments downstream of the dam.
