As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated a resounding hat-trick victory in the Haryana assembly elections, they did not forget to take time out of its celebrations to poke fun at their political opponent, the Indian National Congress.
The BJP placed an order for 1 kilogram of jalebi, which cost around Rs 609 including taxes, from Bikanervala store located in Delhi’s Connaught Place, India Today reports.
The address of the recipient was 24, Akbar Road -- the Congress headquarters in the national capital. In the recipient name, the Haryana BJP had cheekily written “Jalebi for Rahul Gandhi”.
And the final twist in the jalebi order was the payment detail. The order was cash on delivery.
“On behalf of all the workers of BJP Haryana, Jalebi has been sent to Rahul Gandhi’s home,” the Haryana BJP wrote in a tweet, sharing a screenshot of the order details.
The reason as to why jalebi - a coiled sweet batter fried and soaked in syrup - was chosen was not random.
On counting day on October 8, as poll results began to trickle in and the BJP looked set to retain Haryana for third straight term, jalebi started trending on social media.
Rahul Gandhi had made jalebi a poll topic after he had a taste of it from a local shop in Haryana’s Guhana. He had suggested that jalebis needed to be produced in a factory, at an industrial scale, so that it could reach all corners of India and the world.
But the suggestion did not go down well with the BJP, who trolled the Gandhi scion and said that “jalebi factories do not exist”.
After winning the Haryana election, the BJP did not forget to celebrate the historic victory. The sweet of the choice was jalebi. Rajasthan Chief Minister and BJP leader Bhajanlal Sharma went a step further and also tried his hands at making jalebis.
