At least 15 people were killed in a stampede at the world’s largest religious gathering in India’s Uttar Pradesh.

It is feared that the death toll may rise.

The stampede took place when thousands of people started to gather in the area early Tuesday (January 29).

A special unit of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed to bring the situation under control and rescue efforts are underway.

The Uttar Pradesh government said that due to excessive crowding, the stampede incident took place. Many were trapped in the crowd due to the sudden stampede. Rescue work began immediately after the accident. Women and children are among the dead and injured. The injured have been rescued and taken to the hospital.

The Mahakumbh Mela is held every 12 years. The Indian government had estimated that 40 crore of people could attend the festival this year.
