Indian state Maharashtra is set to start clinical trials of Remdesivir, a drug that has been touted as a success in the battle against coronavirus.
Maharashtra government will import the drug from Bangladesh, according to NDTV.
Remdesivir has shown potential success in experimental treatment of coronavirus.
US pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences is the sole manufacturer of Remdesivir. Indian firms that have acquired patent licence from Gilead Sciences are still not manufacturing and marketing the drug in the country as they don't have clearances yet.
Maharashtra is the worst affected state of coronavirus infection in India. The port city of Mumbai has turned into epicenter of the infection in the state. The city has already surpassed Wuhan, the town from where coronavirus pandemic launches, in the number of infections.
Though India has approved the use of Remdesivir for Covid-19 treatment, it has not yet been officially implemented. In this context, Maharashtra government has planned to import the anti-Covid drug from Bangladesh.
