The United Nations (UN) has once again expressed its concern over the large number of people arrested in Bangladesh recently.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, expressed the concern at a regular press briefing on Tuesday (November 7).
“I would refer you to what we’ve been saying for the last week, if not more, expressing our concern at the mass arrests and the general atmosphere,” Dujarric said in response to a question during the press briefing.
A journalist had asked for comment on arrests of leaders and activists of the opposition BNP and the ruling party general secretary’s statement that the UN was useless and had no other role in the world except to say some good words.
“Well, I mean, criticism of the UN is not new. And I think it's been framed in different times. And my question to you is always what part of the UN you're referring to,” Dujarric said.
