The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has commuted the life term imprisonment of Jamalpur war criminal Shamsul Haque alias Badar Bhai to 10 years in jail in a case filed for committing crimes like murder, mass murder, detention, kidnapping, torture and robbery during the Liberation War.

A six-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan delivered the verdict on Tuesday (November 14).

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on July 18, 2016, found guilty eight leaders and activists of anti-liberation Al-Badr force and Peace Committee in Jamalpur and handed down death penalty to three of them and life imprisonment until death to the five others, including Shamsul.

According to the case, Shamsul Haque was charged with crimes like murder, mass murder, detention, kidnapping, torture and robbery during the Liberation War.

As he appealed against capital punishment, the hearing began on July 12 this year.
