Staff Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 30: Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will take part in the upcoming 10th National Parliamentary Elections from Rangpur-6 and Gopalganj-3 constituencies of Jatiya Sangsad.

 

The candidates also include former Chhatra League leaders, former footballer and cricketer.

The Awami League has announced the names of candidates for 297 seats. The Dhaka-17, Dhaka-8 and Kushtia-2 constituencies were kept vacant for JP Chairman HM Ershad, Workers` Party`s Rashed Khan Menon and JSD`s Hasanul Huq Inu.

Besides, majority of the members of 9th parliament received nominations this time. Former Communications Minister Abul Hossain who lost his ministry for alleged involvement in Padma Bridge scam did not get nomination this time.

 

Moreover, noted film actress Kabari was not given nomination. Instead, Shamim Osman was given nomination from Narayanganj-5 constituency.

 

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam announced the final list of the names of candidates at Dhanmondi party office on Friday afternoon.

 

He said the parliamentary board approved the list.

 

Ashraful Islam, who is also the LGRD Minister, said Awami League has given nominations to the candidates on the basis of the opinion of grassroots level leaders.

 

He said the upcoming election is very important for Bangladesh. `There is no alternative to elections in democratic advancement. We hope all political parties will take part in the elections.`

 

Ashraful Islam said Awami League is a major political party of the country. some 2,600 people bought nomination forms. Each of them was eligible for receiving nomination. `Since the number of seats is only 300, it could not be possible to give nominations to many eligible candidates.`

 

He also said: "Today I am announcing the nominations of Awami League candidates. The candidates of grand alliance will be announced later on."
