The High Court (HC) has upheld the Election Commission’s decision scrapping the nomination of ruling Awami League’s candidate Shammi Ahmed due to her dual citizenship.
The HC bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir Lytton and Justice SM Maniruzzaman passed the order on Monday (December 18), rejecting a writ petition filed by Shammi Ahmed challenging the EC’s decision.
During the hearing in the court, lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque stood for Shammi Ahmed while lawyer Mahbub Shafique argued for Independent Candidate Pankaj Devnath, who challenged the candidacy of Shamim Haque with the EC over her dual citizenship.
Earlier, Shammi Ahmed filed her nomination papers for contesting the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections on the Awami League ticket from Barishal-4 constituency.
On December 15, the EC cancelled the candidacy of Awami League candidate from Barishal-4 Shammi Ahmed on the charge of her dual citizenship.
