Shammi, Sadiq Abdullah fail to contest polls

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected a leave-to-appeal filed by Awami League nominated candidate Shammi Ahmed seeking reinstatement of her candidacy for Barishal-4 constituency in the next general election.

The court also ordered to continue the stay order by the chamber judge on the candidature of Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah as an independent candidate for the seat.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Tuesday (January 2).

Following the court order, the candidates will not be allowed to contest the upcoming national polls.

Earlier on December 15, the EC cancelled Shammi's nomination paper on ground of having dual citizenship.

The Election Commission (EC) also cancelled the candidature of Sadiq Abdullah, former mayor of Barishal City Corporation. Later, Sadiq Abdullah filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the HC order.
