DGHS to take action against United Medical

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the United Medical College Hospital had no licence and it was operating illegally.
The health directorate will take actions against the medical college, located in the capital’s Badda area, for illegally providing treatment to Ayan, a five-year-old who died during his circumcision procedure at medical establishment recently.
Dr Abu Hussain Md Moinul Ahsan, director (Hospitals and Clinics), DGHS, told this to reporters at a press briefing at the health directorate on Thursday (January 11).
The DGHS’s announcement comes after Shamim Ahmed, father of Ayan, yesterday (January 10) sought cancellation of the medical college’s licence following investigation into his child’s death.
“United Medical Authority had applied for registration, but their application was defective. They have to apply again properly. But as there is no registration, there is no opportunity for them to carry out treatment,” Dr Abu Hussain said.
He said, “The health directorate, on its own initiative, formed a probe committee over the incident that led to the death of Ayan. The investigation report is to be submitted by 18 January.”
Ayan was taken to United Medical College Hospital on Badda Madani Avenue by his father, Shamim Ahmed, for circumcision on a Tk10,000 package on December 31.
Ayan was given full anaesthesia there, reportedly without parental consent.
When, several hours after the operation, he still was not conscious, the hospital moved him to its Gulshan branch.
Following seven days of keeping Ayan on life support, medical professionals in the paediatric intensive care unit declared him dead late on Sunday (January 7).
