5 get death sentence in gang-rape case in Shariatpur

Five persons have been awarded with death penalty for killing a woman after gang-rape in Shariatpur.
Shariatpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunals Judge Md. Sohel Ahmed handed down the verdict at around 1:30pm on Tuesday.
The court has also fined them Tk one lakh each.
The convicts are Nizam Bali (45), Mohammad Ali (35), Omar Farooq Bepari (24), Al Amin Bepari (20) and Ibrahim Molla (21).
They are residents of Dakshin Sutalkathi of Damudya upazila of the district.
Two defendants were present in the court when the verdict was announced. Three more accused are absconding.
According to the case statement, Feroza Begum (55) of the Bhuiyan Bazar area of Dhankathi Union of Damudya upazila went missing on April 18, 2019. On April 21, police recovered her body with a broken arm and head injuries from an abandoned boat 10 km from her home. The next day, the woman’s younger brother, Lal Mia Sardar, filed a murder case in the Shariatpur court naming 13 people and accusing 2/3 unknown people as the plaintiff.
As five of the accused were involved, the police accepted the charge sheet against them. The rest were acquitted of the charge sheet.
Two convicts admitted to the court that they raped the woman in turn and then killed her.
