So far, 229 Myanmar citizens including army members and soldiers of paramilitary Border Guard Police (BGP) have taken refuge in Bangladesh fleeing their posts amid reports of heavy gunfights between the government troops and the rebels in the junta-run country.

“A total of 229 Myanmar nationals including army members and BGP personnel took shelter in Bangladesh until this morning,” confirmed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam.

He said they have entered Bangladesh through the Tumbru border in Naikhongchari upazila of Bandarban district with weapons and sought refuge.

“Myanmar army members, BGP personnel and civilians are among the 229 who took shelter in Bangladesh", Shariful Islam said.

All the 229 who took shelter in Bangladesh are now in the custody of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he added.

He also said that BGB disarmed them and gave them safe shelter.
