Govt working to prevent propaganda on social media from abroad: Arafat

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat has said the government is working to prevent propaganda on social media from abroad.

The state minister said this in replying to a starred question raised by treasury bench member Chayan Islam (Sirajganj-6) in the House on Thursday.

Arafat said his ministry has no direct authority to take appropriate actions against those spreading misleading information on social media from abroad. However, his ministry is working on the issue, he said.

The state minister said country’s existing laws permit the government to take actions against anyone within the country involved in spreading misinformation or committing criminal activities.

The government will adopt tech based measures to check propaganda against the country, he also said.
