Take step if announcement of India’s GI recognition is contradictory: PM

India has recognised the Tangail Saree named ‘Tangail Saree of Bengal’ as a Geographical Indications (GI) product of Bangladesh. Belatedly, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries is going to recognise the Tangail Saree as a GI product of Bangladesh following the application of district administration.
In this regard, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed to take necessary measures to resolve the matter in international organisation if there is any contradiction with the announcement of India’s GI recognition.
The Premier made the directive at the cabinet meeting, chaired by her, held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Sunday (February 11).
Before the beginning of the Council of Ministers meeting, Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun and Secretary Zakia Sultana handed over the journal on the GI application of Tangail Saree to the Premier.
Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain briefed the reporters after the meeting.
