Dr Yunus gets bail upon surrender

Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus has been granted bail after he surrendered to a Dhaka court in a case filed over the embezzlement of around Tk25 crore from dividends reserved for Grameen Telecom workers.
Dr Yunus’s lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun submitted the bail petition before Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions and Judge Court Judge As-Shams Jaglul Hossain on behalf of Yunus on Sunday (March 3).
The court also set April 2 as the next date to accept the charge sheet.
Earlier on February 1, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) deputy director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan submitted charge sheet against Nobel laureate Dr Yunus and 13 others in the case.
The other accused are Grameen Telecom Managing Director Nazmul Islam, former Managing Director Ashraful Hassan, Directors Nazneen Sultana, Parveen Mahmud, M Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum, and Professor SM Huzzatul Islam Latifee, lawyers Md Yousuf Ali and Jafrul Hasan Sharif, ‘Grameen Telecom Sramik-Karmachari Union’ President Md Kamruzzaman, Union’s Secretary Firoz Mahmud Hassan and Union’s representative Mainul Islam, and Jatiya Workers Federation’s Office Secretary Kamrul Hasan.
Earlier on May 30, 2023, Gulshan Anwar filed the case with the ACC’s Integrated District Office-1 in Dhaka on charge of embezzling Tk 25.22 crore from the fund reserved for the workers.
