Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has said utmost effort will be made through diplomatic channel to return the main accused Akhtaruzzaman Shahin from the United States over the murder of Jhenaidah-4 Constituency Member of Parliament Anwarul Azim Anar.

He made the assertion while responding to a question from the journalists at the opening ceremony of the “Database and Analysis of Road Crash (DARC) Software” training organized at the DMP headquarters on Wednesday (May 29).

Habibur Rahman said: “For what reason the member of parliament was killed or the motive behind the murder - neither the Bangladesh police nor the Indian police have been able to recover it so far.”

He said, “The conspirator and planner of this murder is now out of the country. He could not be arrested. The motive for this murder will be known only if he is arrested.”

In response to the question of what method will be adopted to return the accused person in this case, the commissioner said, “As the main accused is absconding in America. Bangladesh does not have a prisoner exchange agreement with the country. However, highest effort will be made diplomatically to return him.”

“In this case, the police will make the best effort that needs to be done. Since Anar was an MP, his issue will be treated with utmost importance. Although we don’t have that kind of contract with them the US. Every effort will be made through any other medium or diplomatic channel in this regard,” he added.
