40% duty on onions, importers in trouble

Onion import from India has started after five and a half months through Sonamasjid Land Port of Chapainawabganj.

The government of India has imposed a 40 per cent duty on export of onions. As a result, importers are facing difficulties in importing onions.

Due to decrease in onion import, the price of the product in Chapainawabganj market has started to rise.

Due to the Indian government’s ban on onion export, import was stopped for about 5 and a half months. The ban was lifted on May 4 this year. Although 40 percent export duty, import of onion started from May 9 through Sonamasjid Land Port.

According to importers, onion is currently Rs 17 per kg in India. 40 percent Indian duty is Rs 19 and transportation cost is about Rs.7. As a result, one kg onion costs Tk 61 to come in Bangladesh, sources said.
