Bangladeshi diaspora’s role in Portugal lauded

Portugal recognizes valuable contribution of Bangladeshi migrants to its economy, culture and society.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal Rezina Ahmed expressed this view while exchanging greetings with expatriate Bangladeshis from another city in Portugal, Vila Nova de Milfontes, marking the Eid-ul-Azha.
Some 100 expatriate Bangladeshis living in Milfontes and surrounding areas were present there, said a press release of Bangladesh embassy in Lisbon on Monday.
Sources said that an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Bangladeshis are working in different sectors of the Portuguese economy.

Bangladeshi migrants are working mainly in souvenir shops, restaurants, farming, industry and so on. Many of them own businesses. Bangladeshis have also been elected to the Parish Council (local government) in Portugal.
Rezina Ahmed urged the expat Bangladeshis to send their hard-earned remittances through official channels to help boost the economy of Bangladesh.
Regina Ahmed said that expatriate Bangladeshis are intimately involved with the development and success of Bangladesh.
She said, their remittances are playing a helpful role in keeping Bangladesh's foreign reserves strong and the wheels of the economy moving.
