Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged international media to look into where Yunus got the money to do business abroad by working in government statutory bodies.
The premier said this while replying to a question at a press conference on Tuesday (June 25) at her official Ganabhaban residence over the outcomes of her India tour.
She said, "Our government did not do anything against Dr Yunus with any ulterior motive. Grameen Bank was formed during Ershad's rule. They were looking for a managing director (MD) for the bank, and Dr Yunus was appointed to the role. He used to get salaries for the position. He publicized the bank as if he founded it.”
Sheikh Hasina also said that the bank's documents mentioned an MD can only serve until they are 60 years old. He broke the law and stayed in power for another ten years until he was 70.
“Bangladesh Bank brought this to his notice, and then finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and advisor Gowher Rizvi approached him and proposed Dr Yunus to stay in the bank as an advisor. However, he did not want to leave the post of MD. Dr Yunus also filed two cases against the government, the finance minister and Bangladesh Bank. He lost both of those cases,” she added.
