Third round of floods expected in Sylhet-Sunamganj

The water levels in the major rivers of the north-eastern parts of the country began to decrease for last few days due to decreasing rain, but there is a possibility of a short-term flood in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts in early July due to rising water levels in the rivers.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) issued a  warning through a press release on Friday.

According to the statement, the monsoon conditions are currently active over the country and moderate over the northern Bay of Bengal.

Consequently, medium to heavy rainfall may occur in some places within the country's interior due to the influence of the monsoon winds, which might lead to a flash flood situation in parts of the Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna river basins.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Saturday predicted light to moderate and moderately heavy to heavy rainfall or thundershowers with temporary gusty wind at all eight divisions of the country in the next 24 hours commencing 9 am today.

“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country,” said the weather bulletin issued this morning.

Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and strong elsewhere over the North Bay, it added.
