Social media platforms reopening this afternoon

The government has decided to reopen social media platforms—Facebook, YouTube, TikTok by this afternoon.

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak disclosed this information today (July 31) after a virtual meeting with representatives of Meta Asia from Singapore at Agargaon BTRC building.

Palak said, “Social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok can be run using the Internet in Bangladesh within some time. Instructions have already been given. BTRC started working on it”.

He said, “TikTok has replied to our mail and cooperated. TikTok was asked to remove some content spreading misinformation, which they did. TikTok has taken down more than 7 lakhs of content provoking violence.”

Regarding Facebook, Palak said Facebook could not respond quickly due to various limitations. However, Facebook said their factchecking may have errors and they will soon update their AI.
