Interim govt will hold elections as soon as possible: President

President Mohammed Shahabuddin said that an interim government will be formed on an emergency basis by dissolving the current parliament and the interim government will hold elections as soon as possible after discussing with all the parties and stakeholders.

The president said this while addressing the nation on Monday (August 5) night.

He urged the countrymen to remain calm.

The President said that compensation will be given to the families of those killed in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and necessary assistance will be given for the proper treatment of the injured.

A decision has been taken to release BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is under house arrest after being convicted in several cases, the President said.

He also asked the political parties to normalize the law and order situation in the country and stop looting and destructive activities.

The Head of State urged everyone to come forward to ensure communal harmony and security of minorities and protect government properties as well.

He requested everyone to play an effective role in keeping the country’s economy, administration and industries running.

President Shahabuddin assured to open the educational institutions soon subject to discussions with agitating student representatives and teachers.
