Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has decided, in principle, to resign from his post.
He will take the formal decision after consulting with the President by this evening.
The chief justice made the announcement while talking to the reporters on Saturday (August 10) noon.
His decision came following a protest today from students, who issued an ultimatum to him and judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm.
Earlier around 11 am on Saturday (August 10), Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, issued an ultimatum to Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm from the Supreme Court premises.
If the Chief Justice and other judges of the Appellate Division do not resign by 1:00pm, they will besiege their residences, Hasnat Abdullah said.
Earlier, around 10:30am, several hundred protesters, including students and lawyers, started gathering on the SC premises, demanding resignation of the chief justice and the judges of the Appellate Division.
