A Dhaka court ordered Mohammadpur police station to accept the murder case against seven people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader for their alleged involvement in killing a grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed.

Abu Sayeed, 45, was killed in police firing in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on July 19.

The Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after hearing on Tuesday (August 13).

This is first case filed against Sheikh Hasina after she resigned on August 5.

Earlier, an application was made to file a murder case accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others, including the AL general secretary, former home minister and the former IGP over the death of a grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed in police firing in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on July 19.

Amir Hamza Shatil, a businessman and resident of Mohammadpur, filed the application to register the murder case with the Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury.

The court accepted the statement of the plaintiff and reserved the matter for later order.

Taking statement, the court asked Mohammadpur Police Station to register the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR).

The other six accused are Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker and former DB chief Harun ar Rashid, according to the court sources.

Besides, several unnamed high police officials and the then government officials were also made accused in the case.

Amir Hamza Shatil filed the case voluntarily seeking justice for killing an innocent citizen.

According to the case statement, Abu Sayeed was shot dead on July 19 when police was shooting indiscriminately on students and common people during the Quota Reform Movement at Bachila 40 feet intersection under Mohammadpur police station. Abu Sayeed was crossing a road there at that time.
