A case has been filed against 15 police officers, including former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun for attempted murder, assault, and threats.
Lawyer Hannan Bhuiyan filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam on Tuesday (August 20).
The court recorded the complainant’s statement and instructed Kotwali police to accept it as a first information report (FIR).
According to the case statement, on September 12, 2023, a march was organized by the United Lawyers' Front Dhaka Bar Unit demanding voting rights, the restoration of democracy, and the release of BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
On that day, around noon, they were marching from the front of the Dhaka Lawyers Association towards the CMM Court. When the march reached the main road, the police obstructed them and verbally abused them using obscene language and indecent behaviour.
When female lawyers at the front asked for the reason, men wearing jeans and t-shirts started beating them severely. Several female lawyers were injured and subjected to indecency. When male lawyers from behind came forward, the police attacked them, resulting in injuries to several, including senior lawyers, it added.
The statement further said police officers conspired to block the lawyers and attacked them with the intent to kill, causing them severe injuries. Due to the Awami government being in power, it was not possible to file the case at that time.
