Farakka Barrage gates opened

India on Monday opened 109 gates of Farakka Barrage due to floods in Bihar and Jharkhand. However, a source in the Indian government claimed that this would not result in a flood situation, reports Prothom Alo.
Despite claims that flood situation will not arise, the water level in Padma River has already started rising in Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi.
According to Indian government sources, all gates are not opened at the same height. In some places, the gate has been opened 10 to 12 feet, in other places the gate has been opened 3 to 4 feet. As a result, the same amount of water is not released through all the gates.
It is known that the water level in Farakka barrage has exceeded the limit. Currently, the height of the water there is 76 feet.
Mayez Uddin, Sub-Divisional Engineer of Chapainawabganj Water Development Board, said as far as I know 25 to 30 gates of Farakka are opened. These gates are open almost throughout the year. The water level in Padma River has started rising. However, the water of Mahananda and Punarbhaba rivers in the district has not increased.
