Case against Mirza Abbas lifted

A case filed against three people including BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of irregularities in allocating a plot in the Tejgaon industrial area of the capital has been withdrawn.

Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 Judge Md Rabiul Alam gave the order after accepting an ACC application seeking to withdraw the case on Thursday (August 29).

Advocate Mohiuddin Chowdhury, a lawyer for Mirza Abbas, confirmed the information.

Earlier in the day, ACC public prosecutor (PP) Mir Ahammad Ali Salam filed an application seeking to withdraw the case. After hearing the case, the court withdrew the case under trial.

Other two accused in the case include BNP’s former lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi and a government official named Mahfujul Islam.

According to case details, Mirza Abbas allotted a 19.44-katha land to an entity named Pacific Chemicals when he was the housing and public works minister in 2006.

The anti-corruption watchdog later found irregularities with the allocation process of the land in which Abbas, the then BNP lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi, and a government official named Mahfujul Islam were involved.

The ACC filed a case with the Shahbagh police station in this matter on 15 July 2007.

Charges were framed against the accused on February 11 the following year.
