BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas has been acquitted of corruption charges related to the acquisition of wealth outside known income and concealment of wealth information.
Judge Md Masud Parvez of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-6 acquitted Mirza Abbas on Thursday (August 29) as the charges brought against him were not proven.
Mirza Abbas and his wife, Afroza Abbas were present in court at the time of the verdict.
The court had set the date for the verdict after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense on August 22.
According to the case statement, Mirza Abbas acquired assets worth around Tk7,54,32,290, which were not in line with his known sources of income, and concealed information about assets worth Tk5,726,571.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Shafiul Alam filed the case with the Ramna police station on August 16, 2007.
On May 24, 2008, ACC Deputy Director Md Khairul Huda submitted the charge sheet, which accused him of acquiring assets worth Tk4.2 crore and concealing information about property worth Tk22 lakh.
The trial began on June 16, 2008, with the court framing charges, and 24 witnesses provided testimony during the proceedings.
