Jamaat appeals to get back registration in apex court

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI) filed a petition before the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division today, Sunday (September 1) to get back its registration with the Election Commission as a political party.

“An application has been made to the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division (of the Supreme Court) today to revive the dismissed appeal with regard to the cancellation of party registration,” Jamaat’s lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir told journalists.

He said the case pending in the Appellate Division has not been resolved after full hearing and since it was declared ‘Dismissed for Default’, therefore “we applied for revival of the case.”

The Election Commission earlier scrapped Jamaat’s registration while the deposed premier Sheikh Hasina banned its activities as a political party as well on August 1, 2024.
