Joint drive to start 4 Sept for recovering illegal fire arms

The law enforcing agencies will start a drive to recover illegal fire arms from September 4.

Law enforcement forces will have to identify themselves and make arrests while conducting joint operations. No one can be arrested under any circumstances without identification.

A notification signed by Faisal Ahmed, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the matter on Sunday (September 1).

Earlier, Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the home affairs adviser of the interim government said that a joint operation will be launched soon to recover illegal fire arms.

On 25 August, the home ministry revoked all firearms licences issued to civilians between 6 January 2009 and 5 August 2024, during the Awami League government. The people holding licences are required to submit their firearms and ammunition to the nearest police station by 3 September.

The concerned sources said that there are over 50,000 legal weapons in the country.
