Ex-railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan’s remand suspended

A Dhaka court has suspended the remand of former railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan in a case filed for killing a student named Imran Hasan by shooting during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

At the same time, the court ordered police to send him to jail.

After a hearing on Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shaheen Reza issued this order.

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shaheen Reza had granted a three-day remand for Nurul Islam Sujan over shooting and killing student Imran Hasan after Sub-Inspector (SI) Shah Alam Mia of Jatrabari police station, also the investigating officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with a five-day remand prayer.

Nurul Islam’s lawyer applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

On Monday evening, Nurul Islam Sujan was taken into custody by the police from Room no 833 of Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.

During the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on the morning of August 5, Awami League leaders, activists, and police forces opened indiscriminate fire, leading to the shooting and death of Imran Hasan.

On September 1, the victim’s mother, Kohinoor Akhter, filed a case against 298 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sujan.
