Rongdhonu Group Director Mizan placed on 2-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed Mizanur Rahman Mizan, director of Rongdhonu Group and former vice chairman of Rupganj upazila parishad on a two-day remand in a case filed with Khilkhet police station over allegations of demanding an extortion of Tk5 crore.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider granted the remand order after a hearing on Wednesday (September 18).

Earlier in the day, Inspector Md Ashikur Rahman Dewan of Khilkhet police station, also the investigating officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with ten-day remand prayer.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mizan on Tuesday in the Vatara area of the capital.

Earlier, on April 30, Mahbub Rahman Midhu, a security guard, filed the case with Khilkhet police station, against eight named individuals, including Rongdhonu Group Chairman Rafiqul Islam. Mizan is the fourth accused in the case.

According to the case statement, at around 11:30pm on April 28, some people unlawfully entered the property of East West Property Development Ltd and City Multi Agricultural Company Ltd on the instructions of Rafiqul. Armed with locally made weapons, they vandalized warning signboards on the property.

When three security guards responsible for overseeing the property tried to stop them, they were attacked and injured, the complaint says.

One of the accused, Kawsar Ahmed Opu, allegedly snatched a mobile phone and destroyed it.

The case documents mention that the attackers threatened the security guards saying: “We own this property. If you want to keep it, tell your boss to pay us Tk5 crore. If he does not, we will take over the property with more people in the future, and whoever tries to stop us will be killed and their bodies hidden.”

The accused also stole and destroyed signboards worth Tk2 lakh from the property, according to the case statement.
