‘Not possible to establish rule of law sans separate secretariat in judiciary’

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said, “Dual rule is underway in the judiciary although the judiciary is separate. Due to this, judges cannot work independently. It is not possible to establish the rule of law in the country unless a separate secretariat is established.”

The chief justice came up with the information during an address in the Supreme Court’s inner garden at 10am on Saturday (September 21) in presence of nearly 2,000 judges.

Syed Refaat Ahmed said, “The transfer of judges and the policy of appointment based on merit will be formulated. It is the time to set up a separate secretariat. Otherwise, people will not get the benefits of the judiciary.”

“A separate secretariat for the judiciary will be established, which will operate under the Supreme Court. Additionally, a separate policy will be formulated for the appointment of judges, and rules for appointing judges to the Supreme Court should be introduced,” he added.

Legal Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman also addressed the event.

Nearly 2,000 judges from the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, as well as Chief Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman and members of the Judicial Reform Committee, were present.
