A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in a case filed over the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud, who was killed in police firing in the capital’s New Market area.

The court also placed former ward councillor Hasibur Rahman Manik on a five-day remand in the same case.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque granted the remand period on Sunday (September 29) morning.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector (SI) Raihan Uddin of New Market police station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.

The defence lawyer filed a petition seeking cancellation of the remand, which was opposed by the state.

After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand of the ex-IGP and a five-day remand of Rahman.

On July 19, businessman Abdul Wadud was killed in police firing in the Nilkhet area under the New Market police station during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

His brother-in-law Abdur Rahman filed a murder case against 130 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader.
