Hundreds of families displaced by flood in Sherpur district are taking shelter on nearby roads and high places.

Many people have taken shelter at nearby schools and government buildings.

Continuous heavy rainfall and sudden mountain runoff have caused severe flooding in Sherpur district.

According to the Water Development Board, rainfall was recorded at 177 mm in Sherpur and 255 mm and 260 mm at two points in Nalitabari until 10 AM on Friday.

The flood victims said that it rained continuously throughout Thursday night. Due to the continuous downpour, strong currents of water started flowing from Meghalaya, India, early Friday morning, causing the Chellakhali and Bhogai rivers to overflow suddenly.

Farmers have suffered significant losses due to the ongoing flood in Sherpur, as around 4,200 hectares of Aman fields and 1,000 hectars of vegetable fields have been under water.

Continuous rainfall since Thursday has submerged more than 50 villages in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas. Over flowing of Maharshi river, has inundated 40 villages in the low-lying areas.

According to Water Development Board, three rivers in the district are flowing above the danger level due the downpours.

Onrush water from upstream and heavy rainfall caused the surge of water levels. At least 30 educational institutions have been flooded already. Besides, water entered several mosques, madrasa and business farms.

Out of the four important points in the district, water is flowing above the danger level at three points. The water is flowing 172cm above the danger level in Nakugaon point, 56cm in Nalitabari point and 525cm in Batkuchi point of Bhogai river.

On the other hand, the farmers and fishing farm workers are in tension due to the increase of river water in Mrigi River.

Jhanigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ashraful Alam Rasel said that Thursday night's heavy rains and floods from the upstream flooded many villages. However, the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained.
