Ex-Jatrabari OC shown arrested in murder case

A Dhaka court has granted an application to show former Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan of Jatrabari police station arrested in a case filed over the murder of a police officer’s son during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman passed the order on Monday (October 7) after investigating agency DB police produced the accused before the court to show him arrested in the murder case.
Imam Hasan Taim, a student of Government Adamjee Nagar MW College in Narayanganj and the son of Rajarbagh Police Lines SI Md Moynal Hossain Bhuiyan was fatally shot in the Jatrabari area of Dhaka during the recent student protests.
On August 20, Parvin Akhter, the mother of the deceased Taim, filed the case against Md Iqbal Hossain, the deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Wari Division, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Shakil Mohammad Shamim, Assistant Commissioner (AC) Tanzil Ahmed, Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan, Inspector Zakir Hossain and SI Shahadat Ali.
According to the case statement, on July 20, amid the student movement, when a curfew was relaxed from noon to 2pm, Taim went to have tea in the Kazla area of Jatrabari with two friends. Some protesters were demonstrating nearby.
The plaintiff alleged that following orders from Iqbal, Shamim and Tanzil, Zakir and his team had fired tear gas shells, sound grenades, rubber bullets and live rounds at the demonstrators.
Fearing for their lives, the students began to flee in different directions.
Taim and his two friends took shelter inside a tea shop, pulling down its shutter, which was still partially open.
The case document says police pulled them out from under the shutter.
Inspector Zakir Hossain then ordered them to run if they wanted to avoid being shot. Taim ran first, but Zakir Hossain fired at him. Taim succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
