Former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Md Atiqul Islam has been sent to jail in three separate murder cases filed against him in Mohammadpur police station related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider passed the order on Thursday (October 17) after rejecting a bail plea filed by Atiq’s lawyer.

Earlier around 8:30 am, Mohammadpur Thana police produced Atiq before the court, showing him arrested in student Rafik Hasan murder case and requested the court to keep him behind the bars. Later, an application was also made to show him arrested in two more murder cases filed in Mohammadpur police station.

Former DNCC mayor Atiqul was arrested from Dhaka’s Mohakhali DOHS area on Wednesday night.

Business leader Atiqul Islam was first elected as the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation in a by-election held on February 28, 2019, as a candidate of the Awami League.

He was re-elected as mayor in the election held on February 1, 2020.

Prior to this, he served as the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for the 2013-14 term.
