The Appellate Division has granted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's leave to appeal against her 10-year sentence in the Zia Orphanage Trust Corruption case. The court also suspended her 10-year sentence.
A three-member apex court bench, headed by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order on Monday (November 11).
Earlier, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 on February 8, 2018, convicted former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Later, the High Court on October 30, 2018, extended the BNP chief's jail term to 10 years.
The Zia Orphanage graft case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in July 2008, accusing Khaleda of misappropriating over Tk2.10 crore that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.
