Three students of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) were killed after being electrocuted inside a picnic bus in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Saturday morning. Three others were injured in this connection.
Vice Chancellor of the university Rafiqul Islam Khan raised a question about the responsibility for deaths while visiting the victims at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
“This is a very tragic accident. If something like this happens on the roads, then who is responsible for this? I don't want to directly blame anyone,” he said.
About the double-decker buses that are not allowed to ply on the narrow roads, he said, “Why did those who organized the picnic take double-decker buses? I don't know about this. BRTC can know because they rent the buses. The issues will be investigated”.
The incident took place at about 10:30am on Saturday (November 23) at Udaykhali village in Telihati union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Mozammel Hossain Naeem, Mostakim Rahman Mahin, and Zobayer Alam Sakib.
Rafik Mia, an eyewitness, said 460 students of IUT, located in Gazipur’s Board Bazar area, were traveling to Mati Maya Resort for a picnic in six BRTC double-decker buses.
When one of the buses reached Udaykhali village, it came into contact with a high-voltage electric line running across the road. At that time, several students were electrocuted after the bus got electrified. They were later taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
