BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Zainul Abedin Faruque has been acquitted from a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for not submitting his wealth statement.
After acquittal, he told journalists that he had dedicated it to martyrs during students-people uprising in 2024.
“Gratitude, Today's independent verdict is in the context of the second independence that was achieved through the revolution of August 5. The judiciary is now independent”, he said.
Dhaka Divisional Special Judge SM Ziaur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday as the prosecution failed to prove the charges framed against Faruque.
According to the case documents, the ACC in 1999 issued a notice, asking Zainul Abedin Faruque to submit his wealth statement from July 9 to August 22 of that year. But the former lawmaker failed to submit the statement.
The ACC on January 19, 2000, filed a case against the BNP leader and submitted a charge-sheet on June 17, 2001.
The court framed charges against him on March 23, 2006, initiating the trial officially.
A total of three witnesses were examined in the trial.
