A Dhaka court exempted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from a case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for allegedly evading tax.

Judge Rezaul Karim of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10 passed the order on Wednesday (November 27).

According to court sources, today was fixed for holding hearing regarding the framing of the charges in the case. The court, however, cited the allegations brought against the BNP leader as “imaginary and fabricated”. Later, Tarique Rahman was discharged from the case.

Tarique Rahman’s lawyer Abdul Hannan Bhuiyan confirmed the information.

According to the case documents, the then deputy commissioner Samia Akter of Dhaka Taxes Zone-6 filed the case on July 28, 2008, for evading taxes of Tk 26.86 lakh. The complainant had alleged that Tarique from 2002 to 2006 had made an income of Tk 1.07 crore from different sources but failed to pay Tk 26.86 lakh in taxes against that income.
