The state has filed a petition seeking a stay on the High Court’s verdict declaring ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan.
Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque confirmed the development to the media on Monday (December 2).
The petition will come in the Appellate Division’s cause list for the hearing next Sunday (December 8), he said.
In 2017, Supreme Court lawyer Dr Bashir Ahmed filed a writ petition requesting the declaration of ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. Following a hearing, the High Court issued its verdict.
On March 10, 2020, a High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader delivered the verdict declaring ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan.
In the judgment, written in Bengali, the court had stated: “We declare that ‘Joy Bangla’ shall be the national slogan of Bangladesh.”
