The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court’s verdict that cancelled the proceedings of five cases filed under labour law against Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government.
A three-member bench led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam delivered the verdict on Sunday (December 8) after rejecting separate leave-to-appeal petitions filed by the state against the High Court’s verdict.
Senior lawyer Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan argued on behalf of Dr Yunus in court, while Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque represented the state.
On October 24, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued a verdict canceling the proceedings of five labour law cases and one defamation case against Dr Muhammad Yunus.
The cases were filed during the tenure of the previous Awami League government, accusing Dr Yunus, then chairman of Grameen Telecommunications, of violating labour laws.
The cases were filed with the labour court on behalf of dismissed workers concerning a proposed trade union in 2019.
