Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former state minister for posts, telecommunications and information technology, has admitted that the internet was deliberately shut down nationwide during the July mass uprising on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s orders.

He gave the confessional statement during a questioning session held by the International Crime Tribunal’s investigation agency yesterday.

Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam said this while addressing journalists at the tribunal on Thursday (December 19).

During the interrogation, Palak admitted that the internet was not shut down due to a fire incident on data centres in Dhaka’s Mohakhali. It was deliberately shut down nationwide at behest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“The internet was not shut down due to any accident or building fire during the mass uprising. Palak himself confessed that the internet was shut down at behest of Sheikh Hasina. And the purpose behind the internet shutdown was to hide the instances of mass killings during the protests,” Tajul said.
