Several cold waves expected in January

Shivering cold and dense fog have disrupted public life as a cold wave is sweeping through Bangladesh from the first day of the New Year. This situation may persist for next week. Even, the entire month of January may bring a sharp drop in temperatures, with the possibility of multiple severe cold waves.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) shared the information in its forecast for the month on Thursday (January 2).
The forecast predicts two to three mild to moderate cold waves are expected to sweep the country. Additionally, one to two moderate to severe cold waves could sweep the country.
The department further noted that moderate to dense fog could blanket the northern, northeastern, western, southwestern, and central regions, as well as river basins.
Light to moderate fog is expected in other areas, with some regions experiencing fog until midday. Dense fog may temporarily disrupt air travel, inland waterway operations, and road transportation.
Cold waves are categorized based on temperature ranges: 8.1°C to 10°C is considered mild, 6.1°C to 8°C is moderate, 4.1°C to 6°C is severe, and temperatures below 4°C are classified as extreme.
