Rice prices surge, Vegetable prices fall kitchen markets

Citing lack of supply and production disruption due to flood issues, traders have increased the prices of nearly all varieties of rice at retail markets.
Visiting several kitchen markers including new market and Karwan Bazar, this reporter on Friday (January 3) noticed that rice prices have been rising in the market over the past two weeks.
Sellers complained that due to the increase in prices at the wholesale and mill levels, prices have also increased at the retail level.
Retailers are selling a per-kg of BR-28 at Tk65 to Tk68, compared to Tk60 to Tk65 one week ago.
Miniket is being sold at Tk78 to Tk80 taka per kilogram, which was sold at Tk68 to Tk75 two weeks ago. Nazirshail is being sold at Tk80 to Tk86 per kilogram, which was sold at Tk70 to Tk78 two weeks ago.
According to the data fromthe government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the price of rice per kilogram has increased by an average of 12 percent in the gap of a year.
However, the prices of all varieties of winter vegetables have dropped in city kitchen markets.
New potatoes were priced at Tk40 to Tk50 per kilogram, local onions at Tk 50, eggplants at Tk30 to Tk40, bitter gourd at Tk60, carrot at Tk40, bean at Tk30, radish at Tk15, green chili at Tk50 to Tk60, tomato at Tk50 to Tk60.
